Well, you've probably registered to get here, so you've got the basics covered!
First, you'd want to post here:

When you've got that sorted, you'll want to go into your profile and fix it up.
Click on the 'profile' button on the top.
There are some things you'll want to fill in.
Then click on the 'avatar' tab, you can upload or link to whichever picture you want to be your avatar, remember, it can't be too big!
Now, it's time for your signature!
You can put whatever you want in there, as long as there's nothing rude!
You can upload images to sites such as photobucket, imageshack, or my ad-free uploader (can't provide the link here, PM me for it)!
To use images, you'd need [ I M G ] tags. (No spaces). At the end of the image URL, you'll also need [ / I M G ] (once again, no spaces)
Next, you probably want to go into your preferences!
Remember to set the 'always show my signature' to YES, because it will annoy you if you don't
